Our Founder & CEO Aliona Hlivco on The Monocle Daily: The future of UK-EU Relations

Aliona Hlivco, Founder and CEO of St. James’s Foreign Policy Group, recently appeared on The Monocle Daily with Andrew Muller to discuss the complex dynamics between the UK and the EU following Britain’s departure from the block. Her analysis touched on the renewed tensions surrounding fishery rights in the North Sea and the broader implications of Britain’s upcoming renegotiations with the EU. These negotiations include critical agreement on veterinary standards, data protection regulations set to expire this summer, and tariffs on electric vehicles – issues with both economic and geopolitical significance.

During the discussion, Aliona observed that Britain is struggling with a clear strategy towards the EU. While the government appears to be cautiously balancing public sentiment – divided between Europhiles and those resistant to raising the prospect of rejoining the Union – some Labour policymakers, according to Aliona, have privately expressed a desire to restore Britain’s EU membership. However, she noted that any concrete steps in this direction would likely be delayed until a potential second Labour term, which now seems less certain.

On the EU side, the bloc continues to grapple with “breakup pains”, often framing Britain’s experience as a cautionary tale for any members contemplating their own exit.

In Aliona’s view, defence offers a vital opportunity to rebuild trust and cooperation between the UK and the EU. With Europe facing unprecedented security challenges in the 21st century, unity among European allies has become an existential imperative. Defence collaboration could serve as a bridge to re-establish strong relations, fostering stability and mutual benefit for the continent as a whole.
